End of a dead end

Some residents of Ballarat suburb Mount Clear are opposed to plans for a housing development that could shrink the bushland gap to neighbouring Canadian Lakes.

David James lives on Haymes Road which is currently a dead end street that backs onto bushland and the Canadian Creek Reserve.

His home is opposite the bushland where a planning permit application is advertised for a 61 housing lot development that he says will be accessed from Haymes Road.

David is very unhappy as his street would become the main access for the new homes -increasing traffic and removing bushland where kangaroos and other fauna like koalas now live.

“We were told when we purchased here some months ago that this is a koala refuge area and that there wouldn’t be development in the near future, which was one of the reasons we bought here wanting a peaceful place to live.”

David is also concerned the developer hasn’t made its plans clear.

“The bushfire and traffic report says 61 lots of 744 square metres while the agent’s report says 81 lots each 600 square metres in size.”

Ninety-nine large trees are listed to be removed along with native vegetation

“We’re just very concerned that this development has been put up with different guises. There’s been little concern about this beautiful mob of about 30 odd eastern grey kangaroos that live here.”

The Ballarat Council says there’s no cause for alarm over the plans.

The Mayor Mark Harris says it’s currently just an application.

“They’re entitled to apply for anything, they could put 200 lots and it would plainly be knocked back but you know my understanding is it’s 61 lots, the application we’ve received.”

The Mayor says the application is most likely to come before council in April this year.
